10,000 Steps #1
The 10,000 Steps project explored Oakland’s city squares, past and present. It culminated in a permanent meandering neighborhood narrative, ‘Walking the Invisible City’. This looped walk, marked with permanent conversational sidewalk stepping stones, reveals the city within the city: hidden local lore, architectural and cultural history, and points of urban transformation all centered around these historic parks.
Stops with a yellow marker on the above map have an audio component. At each stop, look for the 10,000 Steps oak tree design etched in the sidewalk.
Note: Because of construction, some markers may be inaccessible. Also note that some of the markers have become worn over time and can be harder to see. And some are gone completely.
For your convenience, this tour has been broken into 2 parts. Part 1 is mostly west of Broadway, and Part 2 is mostly east of Broadway.
